Normally Hot drinks, coffee tea etc uses steel can.
If you are used to drink aluminum can beverage, you feel some is left in the steel can because it is still heavy.

Recently pet bottled water, mineral water is getting popular.
You can request mineral water if you are asked for beverage.

 Locations/Other Information

At entrance

Business hours??

It is very difficult to tell whether the restaurant is open or close.
There is generally a sign in Japanese characters.in front of restaurant
Eigyouchu Akinaichu
These signs mean "Open".

But backside of these sign means "Close".
Therefore it is hard to tell open or close from the sign without understanding of Japanese characters.

Noren
Many Japanese restaurants use Noren, looks like a tapestry, as a sign of its open.

Various types, short or long, white and red and various colors of Noren are used.
You find them easily in old street.
When a restaurant is not ready, the Noren isn't set.

Norens are sometimes used at other type of shops.
So Noren-ed shops aren't always restaurants.

Showcase

Almost all restaurants have the show case of the sample dishes
It looks real but plastic model.
It will give you some idea about what kind of food this restaurant will serve you.

No sign Proceed to a table wherever you want Vending machine for food ticket

Ordering procedure

The server will take your order at your table.
At some inexpensive restaurants, you are supposed to find your seat and sit by yourself.

A server brings menu and free drink, a glass of water or a cup of Japanese tea.
At better restaurants, you have a hot wet towel which is called as Oshibori.
I believe this is really good service we can be proud of it.
Some airlines started to service Oshibori before meal in international flight.
Generally Oshibori is served as hot but sometimes it's served as cold in summer. Oshibori

You are expected to order main dishes and drinks at one time. And you need to tell him whether you want to have a drink before meal or after meal.

If you order only beverage first, they think you enter the restaurant to have only drink and never come back to take your main dish order until you call them to make an additional order.

Since no tip system doesn't exist in Japan, you don't need to wait your server for any request.

One thing you had better to remember is;

All your ordered dishes are completely served already if the serving person put the bill on your table backside up.

Paying

Paying is just easy.
  1. Grab the bill and bring it to the cashier.
  2. Pay it at cashier.
You may be able to pay by your credit card at higher class restaurants
